Due to the opening up of the city towards the sea, a process
that began during the 1980s, the seafront has become one of
the busiest leisure areas in Barcelona. Its most outstanding
points are:
The commercial port, ,
the main ways enabling one to move around without too many
architectural
barriers.
Port Vell, ,
currently a leisure area, in which the majority of the streets
and buildings have been rehabilitated and where there is a
large area of restaurants.
Barceloneta, ,
the old fishermen’s district, where it is easy to move
around without obstacles only on the main streets and the Seafront
Promenade.
Port
Olímpic, ,
the sports port created in 1992 for the Olympic Games and Paralympics,
where there are many restaurants that serve seafood specialities.
Diagonal Mar, ,
a new district situated in the east end of Diagonal, facing
the sea. It has a big shopping area, green spaces, housing
and hotels.
The Forum Area, ,
an area urbanised for the Universal Forum of the Cultures Barcelona
2004, totally accessible and currently converted into the Forum
park, a free public space of more than 25 hectares, designed
above all for family leisure.
